UT Tyler alumnae Wendie Short and Becky Martin were selected as Tyler Independent School District’s 2005 secondary and elementary teachers of the year.

Short, elementary teacher of the year, graduated from UT Tyler in May 2001 with a bachelor of science in interdisciplinary studies with a specialization in reading and English.

“I am very honored to receive this award. I never imagined I would accomplish such a goal in four years. I owe a lot to our principal, Dr. Sandra Love and my Bell family,” said Short.

Short is a teacher at Bell Elementary Global Communications Academy, where she teaches a half day of second grade and a half day of kindergarten through second grade technology. She also serves as a co-sponsor for the fifth grade school newscast, The Bear News. Short has four years experience, all at TISD.

“Wendie brings tears to my eyes and a smile to my face as I observe her at work and recall how fortunate public education is to have her touch and mold the minds of our future,” said Bell principal Dr. Sandra Love.

Martin, secondary teacher of the year, graduated from UT Tyler in May of 1984 with a bachelor of science in kinesiology and is currently working on a master’s degree at UT Tyler.

“I was amazed. I knew I was in good company, and anyone of the others could have been selected,” said Martin.

Martin is an English teacher and dean of Robert E. Lee High School’s health science/human services academy. She has 21 years experience, including three years at Lee, 16 years at John Tyler High School, a year at Hawkins High School and a year at Chapel Hill High School.

Robert E. Lee principal Rick McDaniel said, “Becky’s demeanor is extremely pleasant and brings out the very best in others.”

Both will advance to the Region VII competition in Texas Education Agency’s statewide teachers of the year selection process.

Three other teachers, who are all UT Tyler graduates, were selected as runners-up.

Samantha Cheek, fifth grade teacher at Peete Elementary and Carmen Colvin, third grade teacher at Rice Elementary, tied for runner-up in the elementary teacher category. Susan Ederer, 10th grade teacher at John Tyler High School, tied for third place in the secondary teacher category.
