Plans for UC Renovations May Include a Student Fee

Plans to renovate the University Center could result in a new student fee.

The new UC would include full dining services, with five to seven vendors, increased seating capacity, the opportunity for more student programming, a student lounge center and expansion of the bookstore.

“To accommodate students living in the dorms, who will not have kitchens, increasing enrollment and offer a true student center, renovations would need to be complete by 2007 and are roughly estimated at $14 million,” said Dr. Howard Patterson, dean of student affairs, during an open forum Wednesday.

Three concepts submitted by an engineering firm where discussed, but a final design has not been chosen.

A tuition revenue bond is in review with the legislature. If the bond completely passes, UT Tyler would receive $7 million, which is enough to begin phase one of adding dining services.

Students will vote next week whether or not to implement the fee, which could be up to $100 per semester. The senate and house must approve the fee, and the board of regents must then give UT Tyler the authority to implement the fee.

In all probability, the fall of 2006 is the earliest the fee could take effect.

Student voting will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 29 and Wednesday March 30 in the UC and business building.

The open forum session regarding the renovations and proposed student fee will be held again Wednesday, March23 at 5 p.m., Thursday, March 24 at noon and 5 p.m. and Friday, March 25 at noon, all in the UC open area
