UT Tyler/TISD Co-Host Korean Teachers

Korean teachers with UT Tyler teachersTwo Korean teachers visited with UT Tyler and TISD for the past two weeks to learn about secondary education in Texas.

Hong Geum Hi and Kim Ji Young, along with 33 other Korean teachers, recently completed four weeks of a language, culture and pedagogy training in Austin. The teachers then departed for a two-week stay in various Texas cities. Hong and Kim, who both teach English to seventh-graders in Korea, came to Tyler.

While in Tyler, Hong and Kim attended Boulter Creative Arts Magnet Middle School, Hogg Middle School, and UT Tyler educational classes to observe teachers and present material about Korea.

“It is a great opportunity for them to improve their English and learn more of the culture,” said Dr. Peggy Gill, associate professor of educational leadership, who hosted the teachers in her home and coordinated the visit. This is UT Tyler’s third year to host teachers for the annual Fulbright American Studies Institute for Korean Secondary School Teachers of English.

Hong says it is necessary for the students in Korea to learn how to speak English because so much of their trading is carried out with Westerners. Both are excited about sharing their newfound knowledge with their students back home.

The final week of this seven-week program is spent back in Austin, where all 35 Korean teachers will relay their experiences to one another before returning to Korea.
