City Says ‘Thanks for Giving’
October 25, 2005

The City of Tyler invites everyone who contributed to the 2005 hurricane disaster relief effort to participate in a ceremony to tell our community, “Thanks for Giving.”

The event is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. with the ceremony set for noon on Tuesday, Nov. 1 on the front lawn of Tyler City Hall, 212 N. Bonner Ave.

Beginning on Aug. 28, individuals and organizations in the Tyler community began to help those affected by Hurricane Katrina. What initially started as a response to the need for shelter by Louisiana residents escaping the immediate threat of the storm became a coordinated effort to address the long-term needs of thousands involved in the biggest evacuation in our nation’s history. Our churches, hospitals, non-profit organizations, government employees, volunteers and citizens opened their arms and their hearts to help those in need.

East Texas was tested even further when Hurricane Rita grew to Category 5 status on Sept. 18 and seemed headed for the Gulf Coast just a few weeks later. City officials closed the last Hurricane Katrina Shelter the same day they opened the first Hurricane Rita shelter to help the thousands of evacuees who were fleeing from the Gulf Coast. The Tyler community responded once again to help any way it could, even with the eye of Rita projected to pass directly over Tyler.

“I have never been more proud of this city than I was as I witnessed our people respond to those in need,” Mayor Joey Seeber said. “I stand in awe of the citizens of Tyler and East Texas who opened their doors and their hearts to those who were hurting and who had lost hope. I think it is now time to say ‘thank you’ - each of you - for all you have done and all you continue to do for our city.”
