Nelson Kicks-Off Chautauqua Series
October 12, 2005

Dr. Nelson speaking to group
Dr. James Nelson, UT Tyler Brazzel professor and chair of the civil and environmental engineering department, presented research concerning emergency preparedness to faculty and graduate students Oct. 11 as part of the first Chautauqua meeting.

Dr. Nelson introduced “A Vision for Development of a Coherent Plan for Emergency Preparedness” followed by an open discussion of the issues.

The events of September 11 and Hurricanes Katrina and Rita were used by Dr. Nelson to demonstrate numerous issues regarding large scale national disasters that have not been addressed.

The College of Engineering and Computer Science Research Chautauqua series’ purpose is to share research interests and capabilities among faculty and graduate students with a goal of developing interdisciplinary research programs.

Chautauqua refers to a time in the late 1800s when people would come together to discuss and elaborate on issues in a broad, open manner.
