RONALD SHERROD began studying the guitar at the age of ten. His father, a professional guitarist, was his first teacher. In public schools in Texas and California (grades 6 -12) Ron developed an interest in band instruments, learning to play all brass and woodwinds at a proficient level, eventually majoring on trombone at UCLA. His love of the guitar however, having never subsided, led him to earn his masters degree and eventually his doctorate in classical guitar performance. (California State University stated in 1973 that Ronald Sherrod was the first person in the United States to earn a masters degree in classical guitar performance.) Dr. Sherrod has performed extensively as both a classical artist and a commercial jazz musician. As a classical artist he has given numerous solo recitals and has performed with the San Diego County Symphony, the Grossmont College Orchestra, the Point Loma Nazarene University Orchestra, and with many chamber ensembles. He has appeared on stage with such well-known names as Edward G. Robinson, Lynn Redgrave, and the Roger Wagner Chorale. On separate occasions he was asked to perform for functions that honored the celebrities Vincent Price and Joey Bishop. As a commercial musician Dr. Sherrod has performed on many recordings and radio and television commercials. He is a jazz musician of high caliber whose abilities cover a wide range of musical genres and styles. Dr. Sherrod has served on the faculties of Grossmont College, Columbus State University, San Diego State University, the University of Arizona, Point Loma Nazarene University, Cuyamaca College and San Diego City College; and he has written textbooks and music arrangements for major publishers that have been distributed on an international level. |
