Greek Life at UT Tyler
Welcome to Greek Life at UT Tyler
The mission of the office of Greek Life at the University of Texas at Tyler is to promote excellence in leadership, scholarship, and service while challenging members to live and lead according to the principles outlined by their own organization. As leaders of today and tomorrow, fraternity and sorority members are encouraged to positively promote Greek Life in the college and local community. The office of Greek Life strives to enhance the collegiate experience of fraternity men and women through their involvement in the Greek community through leadership opportunities, educational programs, and other services aimed to develop the students through their experience as they become UT Tyler and Greek alumni.
Why Go Greek?
Leadership
Being involved in a Greek fraternity or sorority is a great opportunity to get involved on campus and to hone your leadership skills. Greek students are leaders by being a part of their own organization's executive board, committee member, and chairperson. Greeks are also involved all over campus by serving on the Greek Week Steering Committee, Orientation Planning Committee, Orientation Leader team, Patriot Singers, Student Government Association, The Talon, and more!
Scholarship
Greek students are committed to excellence in scholarship. Each Greek organization sets a requirement for all of their chapter members to maintain a certain GPA in order to remain active and participate in fraternity/sorority events. In the Spring 2011 semester, the all-Greek GPA stood at 2.86, which just barely below the UT Tyler undergraduate GPA of 2.87.
Service
Greeks are committed to service towards their national philanthropy as well as towards their local community. Greek groups complete hundreds of hours of community service each semester, as well as participate in Greek-wide service projects during the annual Greek Week. In the 2010-2011 academic year alone, Greek groups on campus completed over 1,900 hours of community service!
Friendship
Students that Go Greek not only build their own character and development, but they also make life-long friends. Brotherhood and sisterhood in a Greek community are strong bonds that tie a diverse group of individuals together through much more than just wearing the same letters. Once you are Greek, you are Greek for life. These bonds continue on as you become an alumni and discover what the next step is once you graduate. There are alumni groups all over the world where you can still enjoy brotherhood and sisterhood activities and find an instant support group, no matter where you go.
