SOS - International Travel Assistance
The University of Texas System has contracted with International SOS (SOS) to provide worldwide assistance and evacuation services. The program is available to all UT employees and students traveling abroad on University business. SOS is a comprehensive, 24-hour medical and emergency service response organization. SOS does not provide medical insurance, but offers assistance with a variety of travel related issues — from doctor referrals to emergency evacuations.
Membership Card
All UT employees and students are members of the UT
System SOS program. Please contact the Travel Coordinator in
Financial Services to request an SOS Membership Card. The card contains the UT
System Membership Number and other important information. Remember to carry
the Card with you at all times while traveling abroad!
How the Program Works
The SOS Membership Card includes the telephone
numbers of the three major worldwide International SOS Alarm Centers. In the
event of an emergency, call one of the emergency phone numbers listed on the
card for assistance. In medical emergencies, SOS will encourage members to pay
at the point of service and submit a claim for medical expenses with their
insurance provider upon return to the U.S. However, if an individual is unable
to pay, SOS, with the assistance of the University, will contact the
individual’s family in order to establish a line of credit through either
personal credit card or wire transfer. If a family member cannot be reached, SOS
will guarantee payment on behalf of the University. If SOS guarantees payment on
behalf of the University, the traveler will be responsible for repayment of the
costs to the University.
Travel Planning
Before traveling abroad, we recommend you visit the
SOS website to learn more about the program. To access UT System's SOS website,
you will need the UT Membership Number from your SOS Membership Card. Enter this
number in the Members' Website login on the SOS home page at www.internationalsos.com and press
GO! We strongly encourage travelers to complete the online Personal
Travel Record. This information will be helpful to SOS and the
University's staff should you need to be located in the event of a crisis or
emergency. IMPORTANT: So that SOS will know which institution to contact during
an emergency, please enter "UT Tyler" in the Additional Info boxes located in
the Travel and Stay sections.
Travel Companions and
Personal Travel
Travel companions are encouraged to purchase
individual International SOS memberships, and they are eligible to receive a 20%
discount off of the regular membership rate by entering the UT System membership
number when purchasing their membership via the website. Employees and their
families can also purchase individual memberships at the discounted rate for
personal travel.
