CS Acting Chair Appointed SIGCT President
Dr. Stephen B. Rainwater, acting chair and Chandler professor of computer science, has been appointed to serve a two-year term as President of the Special Interest Group for Computing Teachers (SIGCT) of the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE). As presiding officer of SIGCT's executive board, Dr. Rainwater will contribute towards the organization's mission to enhance the expertise of its members and to advocate the teaching of computing as an academic discipline in PK-16 education. With membership of approximately 5000 educators worldwide, ISTE SIGCT promotes numerous initiatives to improve members' pedagogical practice and technical proficiency in computer science and information technology including professional development training, the Journal for Computing Teachers, National Educational Computing Conference (NECC) sessions and workshops, and leadership in NCATE accreditation standards for secondary computer science teacher preparation programs.
UT Tyler Courses Compliant with Federal Security Standards
The University of Texas at Tyler announces that courses offered by its Department of Computer Science have been approved by the Committee on National Security Systems (CNSS) as meeting the requirements of the CNSS 4011 and CNSS 4012 security standards. This accreditation confirms compliance with Federal Security Standards through the year 2014. The CNSS 4011 standard consists of the fundamental security knowledge needed by any Information Systems Security (InfoSec) professional. The CNSS 4012 standard consists of the security knowledge needed by a Chief Information Officer (Senior Systems Manager – SSM) in authorizing systems certified as secure by a security manager. As a result of this accreditation, students at the University of Texas at Tyler who complete the security curriculum will be awarded CNSS 4011 and CNSS 4012 certificates. Any UT-Tyler student awarded these certificates will automatically meet federal employment requirements for the CNSS 4011 or CNSS 4012 certification. CNSS is a Federal Government entity under the U.S. Department of Defense that provides procedures and guidance for the protection of national security systems. CNSS accreditation is the required initial step in establishing a Center for Academic Excellence in Information Assurance at UT Tyler.
“Computer security accreditation places the University and our department at the forefront of information assurance education. It’s a win-win proposition…our students will have a decided advantage when seeking employment in government and industry…and University recognition will go a long way in promoting our new research focus in computer security and open some doors to help secure future external grant funding,” said Dr. Stephen Rainwater, interim chair and Chandler professor of computer science.
Dr. Nary Subramanian, assistant professor of computer science, is scheduled to receive the official accreditation award on behalf of the University at the 13th annual Colloquium for Information Systems Security Education in Seattle on June 3rd.
Conference to be held at UT Tyler
A conference on Representation Theory, Quantum Field Theory, Category Theory, Mathematical Physics and Quantum Information Theory is set to be held October 1-4, 2009 at the University of Texas at Tyler.
The conference will explore the connections between Representation Theory, Quantum Field Theory, Category Theory, Mathematical Physics, and Quantum Information Theory. These fields are interrelated and have motivated each others’ development. The conference will bring together experts in these areas to enhance research interactions.
