UT Tyler Undergraduate Students to Present Research Posters
On Friday July 29 from 9:00 – 11:00 AM in the Ornelas Activity Center Ballroom, seven undergraduate students from the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Engineering and Computer Science will present posters of their summer research experiences. These students have been participating in the UT LSAMP 2011 Summer Research Academy. The UT LSAMP program is supported by funding from the National Science Foundation and provides undergraduate research experiences in an effort to increase the number of underrepresented students preparing for graduate level studies in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) programs.
The seven students who will be presenting their posters are:
- Megan Ballard in mechanical engineering (faculty mentor Dr. Jeff Mountain -- hometown Bullard, Texas)
- James Boulger in biology (faculty mentor Dr. John Placyk -- hometown Yantis, Texas)
- Juan Cerda in electrical engineering (faculty mentor Dr. David Hoe -- hometown Longview, Texas)
- Michael Clarke in computer science (faculty mentor Dr. Nary Subramanian -- hometown Big Spring, Texas)
- Katy Ereman in biology (faculty mentor Dr. John Placyk -- hometown Tyler, Texas)
- Juan Macias in biology (faculty mentor Dr. Blake Bextine -- hometown Tyler, Texas)
- Ciera Ward in chemistry (faculty mentor Dr. Neil Gray -- hometown Tyler, Texas)
The students will also be presenting their posters at the UT System LSAMP Student Research Conference at UT Arlington in September. The first place poster as judged by a panel of University scholars in the local competition will determine the student who will be invited to participate in the UT LSAMP International Experience during the next academic year.
Dr. Stephen B. Rainwater, department chair and Chandler professor of computer science, serves as local campus director of the UT Tyler LSAMP program. Dr. Don McClaugherty, chair and professor of chemistry, and Dr. Jeffrey Mountain, associate professor of mechanical engineering, also contribute in their supporting roles on the advisory committee for program.
All members of the University academic community are cordially invited to attend.
