The College of Arts and Sciences Advising Center is here to do the following:
All students should see their adviser (or the Advising Center staff if they are Undecided), before they register each semester. Your adviser will prepare an individually tailored degree plan, which is the road map for completing your degree. Your adviser is one of your most important contacts on campus. You should take the initiative and arrange an appointment with your adviser at any time during the semester when you need advice or help. For additional information and assistance, contact: |

Selecting a Major Ideally, you should have already decided on your major when you apply to U.T. Tyler. However, if you are undecided, you should contact an adviser in the Office of Student Records or in the College of Arts and Sciences Advising Center. You should declare your major in the first semester and no later than the end of your second semester. Selecting a Minor Many degrees offer the student an opportunity to match a major with an 18-hour minor chosen in consultation with the student's adviser. Generally, students will select their minor from disciplines within the College; however, a minor may also be chosen from other programs: Computer Science, Health, Kinesiology and Business Administration. Filing a Degree Plan Each student pursuing a bachelor's degree in the College of Arts and Sciences is expected to file a degree plan with the academic department during the first semester or as soon as the major and minor are decided. This degree plan outlines your program of study and becomes the basis for conferring of the degree when the plan is successfully completed. The degree plan should be updated at least once a year to ensure that you are on track to graduation. A student may not graduate without an approved degree plan on file in the Dean's office. The degree plan form, which is available in the academic department, must be completed in consultation with the student's academic adviser and the department chair, and must be approved by the coordinator of the College's Advising Center. Any changes in the degree plan must be approved by the adviser, department chair and coordinator of the Advising Center. Earning Advanced (Upper-Level) Hours All students earning a bachelor's degree in the College of Arts and Sciences must complete at least 42 hours at the advanced or upper-level. This is defined as 3000- and 4000-level courses (ie., the first digit of the course number is either a 3 or a 4). Most of your 42 hours will come from your major and minor coursework taken at the upper level while at U.T. Tyler. The balance of upper-level hours will be free electives. Foreign Language Requirement (B.A.degree) Students seeking a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in the College of Arts and Sciences must complete four semesters (12 hrs. min.) of an approved foreign language. Students may complete this requirement by passing a written examination approved by the foreign language faculty.
Pre-Med and Pre-Dental Advising Students who intend to pursue medical, dental or veterinary training after graduation, should consult the Biology Department for information on the appropriate undergraduate courses to take. Applying for Graduation Students apply for graduation in the semester before they plan to graduate. This allows students to know one semester in advance of any deficiencies that need to be completed in the last semester. The deadlines for filing for graduation are as follows:
Students applying for graduation should begin in the Cashier's Office and pay a graduation fee. The next stop is the Office of Admissions and Student Records where an application for graduation needs to be filled out. The Office of Admissions and Students Records will forward the student's application to the College Advising Center where a graduation check will be done to determine whether or not the requirements for graduation have been, or are in the process of being, completed. Students who do not graduate during a semester in which a graduation application is filed must re-file and pay an additional graduation filing fee. CAS Undergraduate Degrees Offered Art (B.A., B.F.A.) The following represent suggested schedules for degree programs that, if followed, will result in students graduating in four years. Even if you do not follow the schedules exactly as planned, these schedules can be very useful in helping you create your own degree plan. Select your degree program to download a suggested schedule.
