Scholarships and Fellowships

Inspiring Excellence Button

The University of Texas at Tyler's highest priorities are to provide an outstanding college education and meaningful student life. Funding for the endowed scholarships enable us to offer competitive support to academically talented undergraduate students and endowed fellowships for graduate - level students.

ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS

There is a steady brain drain underway right now in our region that should concern all of us. Most of the very top high school graduates from our region are being siphoned off to big universities outside of East Texas.

They are lured away for many reasons – the excitement of a big and famous campus far from home and by the reputation of various degree programs there which are led by renowned professors. But often, it is about competition for scholarships.

If we cannot successfully compete for these top young minds in East Texas, they go somewhere else, even when many might otherwise have chosen to stay closer to home

Instead, they head for Austin, Dallas, Houston, College Station, Berkeley, and Boston, many never to return again to East Texas to set down roots and raise their families here

Our strongest graduates – those who will most often become leaders in our East Texas communities – are the men and women with critical thinking skills, and the wisdom to help create solutions to the problems our region faces. So, it is imperative that we attract more and more of the best and brightest.

Those students, of course, are the ones being so heavily recruited by multiple universities. UT Tyler must be more competitive than ever in offering of scholarships and fellowships.

UT Tyler is competing for top students on your behalf – on behalf of all of us who live and work here in East Texas. As we compete for these young men and women, we are also competing for the future leaders of this region.

We have done well in recruiting excellent students, and we are very proud of the young men and women who are part of our University family. Still, we are not yet where we aspire to be.

About 1,400 of our more than 6,000 students are on scholarships. Nearly all have only partial scholarships that do help to defray their tuition costs. Even then, just this Fall semester, we have had to tell about 80 of them that they qualified for scholarships, but that we had no funds left to offer.
