Bob L. Herd Endowed Presidential Scholarship Recipient

 

Melissa Wilcox, Class of 2009, Accounting Major.

 “In addition to being a full-time student, I am also a divorced mother of two young daughters. When I first considered coming back to college after being away 10 years, I was a bit anxious about balancing both the responsibilities and finances of being a full-time student, a full-time mother, and working part-time. 

Because of the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Herd, I have been able to do all both. Receiving this scholarship has allowed me to put my whole heart into achieving my educational goals. As I am nearing the end of my time here at UT Tyler, I take great pride in knowing that I will be the first person in my family to graduate from a university. I can already see in my seven-year-old the desire to excel academically—you have made it possible for me get out of a cycle and begin a tradition. 

I want to thank Mr. and Mrs. Herd and others of you like them, not only for allowing me to further my education, but for changing the lives of myself and my children. It is inspiring to know first-hand the opportunity is available for people who have the desire to succeed, and we are set in motion when given such a valued opportunity—thanks to the generosity of good people like the Herds."
