William D. (Bill) Barrett

Bill Barrett

The loss of Bill Barrett, beloved businessman and philanthropist, is being mourned by staff and faculty at The University of Texas at Tyler.

Bill, who is renowned for his work in education and as a longtime civic leader, died in May at the age of 67.

Bill and his wife, Glenda, were honored earlier this year with the 2012 Patriot of the Year Award from The University of Texas at Tyler.

"We are proud to call Bill our own and we cherish his memory with great affection and unparalleled respect," said university president Dr. Rodney Mabry. "We cannot begin to express our great sense of loss, and extend our genuine condolences to Glenda and their entire family."

Dr. Mabry said Bill and Glenda have been "two of UT Tyler's most generous and loyal supporters."

Bill was a Lifetime Member of the UT Tyler Development Board and was a UT Tyler Gold Patriot Classic Society member, having supported the Patriot Classic for many years and before that the Eisenhower Golf Tournament. In years past, Barrett Motor Company provided the vehicle for the drawing.

Since 1992, the Barretts have supported UT Tyler with many gifts to the Eisenhower and Patriot Golf Classic, the President's Associates and the Cowan Center.

In 2007, the Barretts established the Bill and Glenda Barrett - Greater Texas Foundation Removing Education Barriers Scholarship.

Bill was a former UT Tyler Foundation Board Member.   Glenda is an Associate Member of the UT Tyler Ambassadors and a dedicated volunteer.

Bill's warm and generous spirit will be dearly missed, but the effect and positive influence he had on the students at the University of Texas at Tyler will always be remembered and celebrated.
